Jane has been a voice teacher since 1984. She is passionate about enabling people to find their natural speaking and singing voices – especially people who have been told they can’t sing or are just beginning. Jane offers voice-confidence and singing lessons and workshops to groups and individuals. Jane’s breath work calms the nervous system and is very helpful for people who need to reduce anxiety or are living with the symptoms of PTSD.

Jane’s work is underpinned by the Alexander Technique principles of allowing the natural voice to emerge by reducing the habitual muscular tension that so often causes a strangled feeling in the throat and disrupted breathing patterns. In addition the technique uses mindfulness practices to help reduce the anxiety and its physical impacts that so many people experience when faced with speaking or singing publicly.
Jane Coker is a qualified Alexander Technique Teacher holding a Diploma in Alexander Technique and is a full member of the Australian Society for Teachers of Alexander Technique (AUSTAT).
Her own experience of the technique has been an end to over 20 years of chronic lower back pain, an increased vocal range and a better ability to deal with stress.
“I have over 25 years experience as a singer, saxophonist, voice teacher and community music facilitator. Originally from the UK, I have worked in Australia since 1999.
I am passionate about helping ordinary people to find a voice and to make music, both with their voices and with instruments. I love to work with people who just want to have fun singing or playing and have never tried or gave up ages ago. As well as teaching individuals I also specialise in group workshops.”
Alexander Technique is awareness of how we do what we do used to enable us to use our voices and bodies with less pain, greater ease and in ways that do not aggravate existing problems or cause further injury. Through the process of learning to release tension in the neck, back and limbs, speaking, singing and everyday movements such as sitting at a computer, lifting children, driving, reaching, bending etc become achievable where previously they were difficult or even caused pain. People of all levels of fitness and health can benefit from the technique.
Jane is encouraging, gentle and a skilled teacher.
Jane’s lessons are inspiring, encouraging, fun. I’ve learned to use my voice and body in a much easier way and the best thing is when I’m scared of speaking I know exactly what I need to do to overcome the fear. I feel like I have new confidence in my voice.
