COMMUNITY MUSIC-MAKING FACILITATOR

Jane has a lifetime of experience of getting people to make music together. In the early 1980’s she first experienced Frankie Armstrong’s approach to freeing up the natural voice and aural learning and has been leading singing sessions and voice workshops along these lines ever since, becoming a relentless initiator of community singing and instrumental projects aimed at enabling people with little or no experience to sing and play together. She is also an experienced trainer and facilitator and has been devising and delivering training to community singing leaders across the state as part of Community Music Victoria’s “Victoria Sings” program since 2002.

Jane is skilled in facilitating group song writing and was nominated for a Green Room Award for Outstanding Composition for the Performing Older Women’s Circus show “This Skin” (Directed by Vanessa Chapple) in April 2006. The original music and songs in this show were generated by the whole performing group under Jane’s facilitation.

She is well known in Victoria and in the UK for her initiation and leadership of numerous community choirs and singing groups.

She was a founder member in 1983 of the UK street band The Peace Artistes, which is still thriving and inspiring other community musicians, and, in Melbourne in 2002, of Havana Palava – a vibrant carnival-style band which includes musicians of varying musical abilities.

She was a member of Community Music Victoria’s board of management from 2002 – 2017.
